Abandoned
In my travels as a documentary photographer, I often explore less traveled areas of the cities and towns I visit; I am drawn to spaces that people might overlook or places that might be forgotten. There is a spirit in these places, magic totems that will resist the rust and rot of their circumstances. These structures may pass on, but the photographs will remain as a legacy to the vibrant life and purpose these places once enjoyed.
Stepping into an abandoned structure brings a sense of adventure tinged with melancholy and sadness: The damp cold, the stark quiet, the absence of people. Some are blank canvases, empty and shorn to the studs, but many contain tantalizing remnants and artifacts – hints, both pedestrian and profound, of the real lives that were there and have now departed, bearing witness to the untold stories of lives interrupted.
These photographs ask you to look beyond the inevitable ruin of the buildings, to honor the memory and legacy of those who went before; to reflect upon our collective fleeting presence in the universe, and hopefully to make meaning out of that realization.
